Transportation

Getting There
To get to Cameron Highlands, there is only one way to reach there, which is by road transport. However, there is also few road transports to choose from. Of course you can get there using your own vehicle, which is by driving yourself or get a bus ticket from your local express bus hub (to Ipoh/Tapah or Cameron Highlands directly). Alternatively, you can get a train ticket to Tapah/Ipoh and then transit to Cameron Highlands by inbound express bus.

Driving to Cameron Highlands

  • There are two route that lead to Cameron Highlands, the new route (a.k.a. Simpang Pulai route) and the old route (a.ka. Tapah route)
  • The Simpang Pulai road condition is much more better, wider and less winding (but further for the visitors coming from Kuala Lumpur)
  • Simpang Pulai Route Directions: Take the Simpang Pulai exit (Exit 137), pay the toll fares, you will reach a traffic light. Turn right and go straight, turn right again at the first traffic light and go straight, you are headed to Cameron Highlands. Throughout the journey to Brinchang/Tanah Rata, there will be two (2) junctions. One at halfway (towards Gua Musang) and another at Kampung Raja. Turn right at the first junction and left for the latter
  • The Tapah road is narrower, more winding and landslide often happen causing traffic congestion. Besides, the vegetable/fruits transporter will normally use this route because of the shorter distance and they can save more cost on petrol and toll
  • Tapah Route Directions: Take the Tapah exit (Exit 132), pass the toll booth and turn left on the first traffic light. Go straight and you will heading to Cameron Highlands. The first town you reach will be Ringlet.
  • : My suggestion is use the Simpang Pulai route because of the less winding and wider road. Although need to pay more for petrol and toll, but it is worth the value. I remember there was once i went up Cameron Highlands using the Tapah route and i end up with motion sickness. You wouldn’t want to turn your pleasant vacation into disaster, will you?

Transportation Tips & Trick

In my opinion, it is best to travel around Cameron Highlands with a car, simply because of convenience and flexibility. Cameron Highlands is no Singapore or Genting Highlands. In Singapore, public transport is so convenient that the visitors does not require any personal transportation to move about. At Genting Highlands, everything is under one roof so the vehicle is only to use for uphill and downhill. If you do not have any personal transportation, try to tag along your friend with vehicle. Without a car, your vacation will be tiring and troublesome.

If you are taking the Simpang Pulai route, Gunung Rapat (Sam Poh Cave, Nam Tin Cave etc) and Ipoh Town is just 15 minutes drive away. At Ipoh Town, you can try the local cuisine like Old Town White Coffee, Beansprout Chicken, Chicken Slice Hor Fun (Noodle), Taufu Fah or get some local biscuits as gift for friends or colleagues. To get to Ipoh Town, after the Simpang Pulai toll booth, then turn right at the traffic light. After that goes straight (around 10 minutes drive), you will reach a round-about, take the left turn (9 o’clock) and goes straight again. You will reach Ipoh Old Town after the first traffic light.

If you are taking the Tapah road, spare some time to visit the store/booth set up by the aborigines (Orang Asli), maybe you can get the souveneirs from them which is unique and cheap. Besides, you can also visit the Iskandar Falls and Dam on your way uphill or downhill, but to avoid any traffic congestion cause by landslide or heavy vehicle ahead, use to alternative route (Simpang Pulai route).
